Frederick Bertie Neate

As Les's Mum's Father's Brother, Fred was Les's Grand Uncle.  He was born in 1888 and thence served in the First World War, where he died on 9th March 1818, aged 30.

Before he died he married Alice Elizabeth and had three children, Lilian Alice (born 13 Aug 1909), Ivy Katherine (born 18 Jul 1911) and Violet Mary (born 12 Dec 1912). His family home was 14 Regent Road, Herne Hill, London.  A school now occupies the space where that house existed, however further along the same road are houses similar to one they might have lived in.

Before the war he worked with the London Parks Department.

He served as a Private (service no 722793) from 1916 until his death in the 24th Battalion of the London Regiment, and thence served in Salonica, Egypt and Palestine.  His total service was one year  and 9 months, until he was killed in action on the 9th March, 1918.   His death is commemorated in the Jerusalem War Cemetary, Isreal, Grave Reference K24.  (Jerusalem War Cemetery is 4.5 kilometres north of the walled city and is situated on the neck of land at the north end of the Mount of Olives, to the west of Mount Scopus.)
